Platinum Ore Farming Guide

Published 4 months ago by Raextor for patch 8.1.5

This platinum ore farming guide will show you the best areas to farm Platinum Ore in BfA and give you general instructions on how to farm it more effectively.

General information and preparations

Legion was the first expansion which implemented a rank-based profession system in World of Warcraft – a system that is continued in BfA. With it, you can gather almost everything from the get-go but Rank 2 and 3 of said skills are more efficient as they yield higher returns.

Farming Platinum Ore is a bit different than farming other ores since it is a rare spawn of Monelite Ore. Whenever you mine a Monelite Ore Deposit there is (supposedly) a chance of 5-8% that it will respawn as a Platinum Ore Deposit. This means that you are actually just farming Monelite Ore in hopes of it respawning as a Platinum Ore Deposit.

Platinum Ore ranks

You can learn its first rank directly from your mining trainer in either Boralus or Daz'alor as it only requires a BfA mining skill of 1.

Rank 2 of Platinum Ore comes from looting an [Exceptional Platinum Shard] from one of your harvested nodes. Once obtained, it will start a new quest called An Exceptional Platinum Shard which rewards the second rank at its end. Note, that it is not a 100% guaranteed drop and that you will need a mining skill of at least 130.

The third rank can be acquired through looting a [Platinum Map] while harvesting Platinum Ore. The item will then start a quest chain leading you to Vol'dun where you finally obtain this last rank.

How to speed up farming

Like every expansion Battle for Azeroth introduced a handful of nifty items and tools that will speed up your farming sessions and are advised to be crafted or purchased directly from the auction house for cheap:

  • [Monel-Hardened Stirrups] allow you to gather ores while mounted (most useful).
  • [Monel-Hardened Hoofplates] increase your mount speed by 20%.
  • [Coarse Leather Barding] prevents you from getting dazed.

Additionally, depending on your faction you should enchant your gloves with either [Enchant Gloves – Zandalari Mining] (Horde) or [Enchant Gloves – Kul Tiran Mining] (Alliance) to speed up your mining considerably. This speed-up results in lowering your mining cast from 1.5 seconds to 0.5 seconds – quite a decrease wouldn't you agree?

Furthermore, I highly advice on using a paladin or death knight as those two classes come with a flat-out mount speed buff of additional 20%, saving you the usage of [Monel-Hardened Hoofplates]. You should also consider using their tank specialization as tanks are not getting dazed, sparing you the [Coarse Leather Barding]. This leaves the [Monel-Hardened Stirrups] to be the most useful item in this setup especially when flying is introduced to BfA in patch 8.2.

Remember: When patch 8.2 comes around the game changes a little bit as flying is introduced on Kul Tiras and Zandalar making druids quite competitive due to their ability to gather resources while in their travel form.

Farming Platinum Ore in Drustvar

Many consider Drustvar as the ideal zone to farm, but I disagree, as Tiragarde Sound is far superior – just littered with bots from time to time. Anyhow, should you decide to mine in Drustvar and notice that ore deposits don’t spawn as frequently anymore you should follow the red route to give the white one more time to respawn its nodes.

Farming Platinum Ore in Nazmir

As any marsh, Nazmir is rutted with many small streams making any water-walking mount or ability a must to traverse this zone and farm effectively. If you notice that node spawns are gradually decreasing it might be because of your mining speed. You should then proceed to follow the longer route marked in red to give the smaller route (marked in white) some time to recover.

Farming Platinum Ore in Stormsong Valley

Stormsong Valley has the third highest concentration of mining nodes of any of the six new zones. Many of them are located inside of caves making the route slightly less effective due to the time you spend underground. I only advise to enter them if your map indicates more than two possible spawns, otherwise it could slow down your farming speed.

Farming Platinum Ore in Tiragarde Sound

Tiragarde Sound offers the most ore deposits of all the new zones introduced in Battle for Azeroth. It also comes with two possible farming routes instead of one. While the lower certainly covers more ground, I advise you to farm the upper as nodes are not stretched out as much.

The downsides to this are the increased number of mobs around your route and the sheer number of botters which tend to roam the area.

Farming Platinum Ore in Vol'dun

Vol'dun is an impressive site but can prove itself as a very frustrating zone as it has a lot of vertical ups and downs making it necessary to know the terrain to get around fast. The zone also comes with some highly packed areas around the route making some deposits annoying to get. The red route isn't worth your time and when considered should only be used by alliance players as it leads directly through their encampment.

Remember: If Tiragarde Sound gets too crowded, Vol'dun will be swarmed by bots.

Farming Platinum Ore in Zuldazar

Zuldazar offers the fewest ore deposits of all the new zones in BfA containing only 443 possible spawn locations (recorded so far). Additionally, you should only consider this route as a horde player as you must go through their main city in the lower section of the map.
